Biodiesel breathes better

It is long-established that car exhaust fumes cause respiratory disease, and more recently the particulate matter in diesel exhaust has been implicated in the death of human airway cells. However, new research reveals that biodiesel is a safer alternative

Pulse-lavage brushing followed by hydrogen peroxide-gauze packing for bone-bed preparation in cemented total hip arthroplasty : a bovine model

To compare the effectiveness of pulse-lavage brushing followed by hydrogen peroxide-gauze packing with either technique alone or normal-saline irrigation in bone-bed preparation for cemented total hip arthroplasty. 44 fresh-frozen ox femoral canals were prepared for cemented total hip arthroplasty using 4 techniques: normal-saline irrigation, pulse-lavage brushing, hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing, and a combination of the latter 2 techniques. The maximum tensile pull-out force required to separate the prosthesis from the femoral canal was measured as an indicator of the strength of the cement-bone interface. The mean pull-out force to separate the prosthesis from the femoral canal was significantly higher in specimens prepared with pulse-lavage brushing followed by hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing or pulse-lavage brushing alone than those prepared with normal-saline irrigation or hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing alone 300(p<0.001). Pulse-lavage brushing is more effective at cleansing the femoral canal and increasing mechanical strength at the cement-bone interface than preparation with normal-saline irrigation or hydrogen peroxide-soaked gauze packing.<br /

SOFT TISSUE LOADS AT THE HUMAN KNEE DURING RUNNING AND CUTTING MANOEUVRES

Tensile forces on the ACL increase when the knee is in an extended posture and required to accommodate applied moments in flexion, varus, valgus and/or internal rotation. However, the loading of knee joint support structures during sporting actions that are related to non-contact injuries are largely unknown. We studied external loading of the knee during running, side-stepping and cross-over cutting in 10 male subjects under both pre-planned and unanticipated conditions. Soft tissue structures of the knee were exposed to high FE, VV and IE applied moments during the cutting tasks, especially when performed in the unanticipated condition. Whilst muscle activation could accommodate some of this applied load, soft tissue structures were particularly vulnerable during the cross-over cut task where the residual loads were high

ANTHROPOMETRY AND STRENGTH PREDICTORS OF GRINDING PERFORMANCE IN AMERICA'S CLIP SAILORS

Get PDF
This study aimed to determine what anthropometric and strength factors could predict performance in America's Cup grinding. Eleven male America's Cup sailors were measured for 42 anthropometric dimensions, and bench pull strength, and their power output was obtained from repeated eight-second maximal bursts of high load backwards grinding. Strength and body mass had the highest relationships with grinding performance. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that strength was the major determinant in grinding ability, explaining 64% of the known variance in grinding performance. Total arm length and total leg length were the best anthropometric predictors of performance, each explaining 9% of the remaining variance

AMERICA'S CUP GRINDERS' POWER OUTPUT CAN BE IMPROVED WITH A BIOMECHANICAL TECHNIQUE INTERVENTION

Grinding provides the power behind tacking and gybing, where the yacht crosses the wind to change direction. This study evaluated the effect of a technique intervention on grinding performance. Ten America's Cup grinders were assessed, via videoed joint kinematics and grinder ergometer power output, before and after a technique intervention based on biomechanical principles. Anthropometric measures were obtained from each grinder using ISAK protocols. Maximal strength was assessed using 1 RM bench pull. The intervention produced a 4.7% increase in mean power output (p = 0.012). Regression analysis indicated predictors for grinding performance were COM. position and maximal strength

THE EFFECT OF LOWER LIMB TRAINING ON MUSCULAR SUPPORT OF THE KNEE AND RISK OF ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT INJURY.

An intervention study was performed to investigate the effect of lower-limb training programs on knee muscle activation patterns and their potential to support the knee load during running and cutting manoeuvres. It is known that balance training can reduce ACL injury but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. The effects that strength training has on support for the knee joint during sporting manoeuvres are also not known. Analysis of activation levels and patterns of leg muscles during running, sidestepping and crossover-cutting manoeuvres prior to and following 12-week training programs revealed important results in terms of potential support of load on the ACL. Balance training increased co-contraction and supportive muscle activation patterns, as did the combination of machine and balance training to a lesser extent. The strength training programs tended to reduce co-contraction and were associated with changes which would lead to less stability of the knee during sporting manoeuvres. It is recommended that balance training should be implemented to reduce an athlete’s risk of ACL injury
